An example of an "impacted" impact window.
Impact Glass vs. Shutters
Every product has its pros and cons and from the perspective of window/home protection; Shutters provide more consistent, cost-effective protection than Impact Glass in the long and short term. Although Impact Glass can withstand impacts, the impact ruins the window and requires full replacement of the glass. Impact Glass shatters inside of its frame when impacted in storm, accident or intrusion situations, requiring full replacement of the Glass which can be even more costly than the original installation. It provides no security to the home/business and has no additional energy-efficiency or insulation than standard glass unless otherwise rated. So, when looking at the cost of traditional glass together with roll down shutters, as opposed to Impact Rated Glass, you have a similar initial investment but far more long-term benefit and lower replacement costs with the glass/shutter combination. When used in combination with a low-cost method such as Lexan panels or our Accordion shutter, the cost of a standard window and shutters are far lower than your cost of an impact window alone.
Just because the window will protect your home doesn't mean it doesn't have to be replaced after a storm (see picture to the left). The fact that we offer a custom designed product taken from your specific measurements to ensure a quality fit for your project, is yet another reason shutters should be chosen. With a sound fit, our shutters can withstand a minimum of 140mph winds and are all Small and Large Missile Tested.
